A new drum circle studio just opened in North Berkeley (next to Mr. Mopp's). Katie Specter went to the first session of a new Wed afternoon class (5-6pm) and it was GREAT. There's still room if you're interested. I (Katie's Dad) would pick up a kid from aftercare, even.
Music Connects offers weekly drum circles for children age 7-11, starting a 6 week
cycle May 2nd- June 6th on Wednesdays from 5pm-6pm. Costs per child: $150
The drum circle is designed to expose children to a large number of tuned and un-tuned
percussion instruments such as: congas, bongos, djembes, African talking drum, marimba
phones, xylophones, boom whackers, rattles, pipes, cymbals, shakers and a thunder sheet.
Kids are encouraged to find their own beats, experiment and learn from one another
to create group rhythms that can reflect their very own energy, personality, ideas,
imaginations, feelings and stories. They will learn the basics on how to play anything
they choose, have fun and connect with each other through rhythm. Rhythm games,
interactive improvisations and the joy of being part of a group will foster skills, self-
esteem and social -emotional growth on many levels.
